2013 MONTGOMERY WOMAN'S CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS
The Montgomery Woman’s Club actively promotes education, leadership training and good citizenship. Each year, we distribute scholarship funds to three students
- “tuition” for a young woman to attend the Girls Career Institute
- the $1500 Ethel Baker Scholarship for a young woman from Montgomery High School who is pursuing a career in nursing or another healthcare profession
- a general scholarship of $1000
In addition, we confer two citizenship awards to MHS graduating seniors of exceptionally strong character.
When interviewing applicants for these awards, we look for individuals who demonstrate a zest for life, a love of learning, impressive achievements in and beyond the classroom, and a commitment to making the world a better place.
2013 Award Recipients
The young woman we sponsored at the Girls Career Institute is Kristin Manahan of Somerville. She attends Immaculata High School.
Nicole DeSario received the Ethel Baker Scholarship for Nursing ($1,000). Raised with two brothers by a single Mom, Nicole pursued a rigorous curriculum, chockfull of Advanced Placement and Honors courses, at Montgomery High School. She earned her Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Powerfully motivated by personal experience in her early teen years, Nicole founded MASK Theater: a group of teen educators who focus on relationship abuse, violence in the media and self-image. She has earned more than 15 awards for leadership and volunteerism. She plans to attend the College of New Jersey to double-major in nursing and political science, with a minor in Spanish.
Eleanor Romano received the Montgomery Women's Club General Scholarship ($1,000). This award is given to someone who demonstrates a zest for life, a love of learning, impressive achievements in and beyond the classroom, and a commitment to making the world a better place. Ellie Romano stood out for her passion about journalism, her record of leadership and service, and her exemplary work ethic. She was editor of the student newspaper “PawPrint”, a Peer Leader, and a member of the Interact community service club and the National Honor Society. She also was manager of the highschool softball team and a weekly volunteer at Acorn Glen assisted living residence.
The Citizenship Awards went to Cam Hoos and Melissa Ribiero. These awards are based on high recommendations from teachers and guidance counselors. Cam and Melissa each walked their own path and made unique contributions throughout their high school years. But they share qualities that have deeply impressed their teachers: they meet the highest standards of integrity and determination, they encourage those around them and lead by example. They work hard, they take risks, they persevere no matter what.
